When we talk of antenatal care, we start with pre-pregnancy care. once pregnancy is confirmed, different tests will be done at different stages of pregnancy.
Pre-Pregnancy Tests:-
- Routine lab investigations
- Check for any existing medical conditions/history
- Thalassemia ( Genetic disease)
- Infection (VDRL)
- Hepatitis
- Rubella
- Pap smear
- Nutritional advice
- Recommended exercise
As soon as pregnancy is confirmed, specific tests are advised.
First Trimester:-
- Routine BP/Weight/ urine exam at each visit.
- Ultra sound full bladder
- To confirm pregnancy is in the uterine cavity.
- Check for single/multiple pregnancies
- Any associated anomalies.
- Counsel couples on genetic problems
- Trisomies like Downs Syndrome & others.
- OSCAR test (one-stop clinic for assessment of risk 11 to 13 weeks)
- NIPT – Non Invasive Prenatal Test
- CVS ( Chorionic Villus Sampling)
Second Trimester:-
- Routine BP/weight/urine exam/lab investigations
- Ultrasound to detect structural abnormalities.
- Triple / Quadruple markers.
Third Trimester:-
- Routine Bp/ weight/ urine exam/ lab investigations.
- Checking for pre-ecclampsia which can impair the growth of the baby.
- Ultrasound for fetal growth and monitoring.
- Doppler study.
